What is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction is a procedure that creates natural-looking breasts for women who had their breast removed. The purpose of the procedure is to come as close as possible to restoring the appearance, shape and size of the breast. The surgery helps to improve the confidence and quality of life for many women. While breast reconstruction surgery can have a tremendous impact on a women’s physical appearance and emotional well-being, it is important that patients have realistic expectations. The newly reconstructed breast will not feel, look or have the same sensations as the breast that was removed. The procedure will also leave visible incision lines on the breast and donor site.
Benefits of Breast Reconstruction
For women who have battled breast cancer, breast reconstruction surgery is very important. The surgery is also of great significance to women who have lost a breast as a result of other medical conditions or trauma. Some women lose their sense of femininity when they lose their breasts. An improved physical appearance and emotional mindset are some of the benefits of breast reconstruction. As the effects of breast cancer become better known, women are now able to find surgeons that are skilled in the latest breast reconstruction surgical techniques. The surgeons are able to produce more realistic-looking breasts, allowing women to feel more confident.
When Is The Right Time For Breast Reconstruction?
At Atlanta Center for Breast and Aesthetic Surgery, breast reconstruction surgery may be performed either during the same surgical appointment as the mastectomy or some time later. Typically, we recommend immediate breast reconstruction to reduce the physical impact of multiple surgeries, as well as the emotional impact of losing a breast or both breasts.
The Breast Reconstruction Procedure
There are various options for breast reconstruction that are available to you. The right one for you will depend on your anatomy, Dr. Work’s preferences, and your desired look. Skin expansion with a breast implant is the most common. A tissue expander is inserted after the mastectomy for preparation. The expander is filled with saline. After surgery, the breast mound is restored. Scars are permanent but fade with time. Flap reconstruction allows for the breast to be rebuilt with natural tissue, and unlike the tissue-expander method, the breast mound is completed at the initial operation without the need for expansion over extended time periods using tissue from the abdomen (TRAM Flap), the back (Latissimus Dorsi Flap) and/or buttocks (Gluteal Flap). Follow-up procedures such as nipple reconstruction, shaping of the new breasts and breast lift/reduction surgery of the contralateral breast are common.
What Are Advantages Of Flap Reconstruction?
Flap reconstruction surgery is the latest and most innovative technique in breast reconstruction. It reduces the possibility of complications because the breast that is lost or affected will be reconstructed from your body’s own living tissue, producing results that feel totally natural and usually that last a lifetime.
How Is The Nipple Reconstructed?
Dr. Work uses local tissue to sculpt a natural-looking nipple for the reconstructed breast. The darker coloring of the nipple and the areola is typically achieved using medical tattooing when necessary.
Breast Reconstruction Recovery
After surgery, dressings are removed in three days and drains are removed within the first one to two weeks. Soreness at surgical sites will diminish and your energy level will increase. After several weeks, you can return to normal activity and perform stretching exercises. Your scars will also begin to fade.
Why Are Stretching Exercises Important After Breast Reconstruction?
Because the mastectomy and breast reconstruction surgeries cause pain, weakness and stiffness in the arm and shoulder on the affected side, you will be instructed by Dr. Work to perform specific stretching exercises to regain your strength and range of motion in these areas. This will also prevent scar tissue from accumulating in the area of the armpit and/or shoulder.

For those not covered by insurance, the Atlanta Center for Breast and Aesthetic Surgery proudly offers CareCredit® and Prosper® Healthcare Lending as financing options.
