Hair Restoration in Atlanta, GA

Approximately 66 percent of men and 20 percent of women suffer from hair loss, so you are not alone if you too are plagued. In the past ten years, the techniques and technologies for hair restoration have improved significantly to give men and women better, more natural results. The Hair Transplant Center of Atlanta, led by Dr. Frederick T. Work, Jr., offers hair restoration for the ever-increasing number of men and women in and around Buckhead, Vinings and Sandy Springs, who want to restore their hair and achieve superb results.

What Is Causing My Hair To Fall Out?

Men and women may begin to lose their hair as early as their 20s. Hair loss is not a result of aging or other personal hygiene habits. The leading cause of hair loss in men is genetics and for women, changes in hormone levels, such as what occurs during pregnancy and menopause. Hair loss can also be caused by certain medical conditions, illnesses, and medications.

What Are The Most Important Factors In Hair Restoration?

In order to be considered for a successful hair restoration procedure, you must have adequate, healthy donor hair on the back or sides of your scalp. If you do not have the required donor sites, hair restoration is impossible. The quality of the donor hair is also a factor. Patients with lighter hair color and coarse hair will achieve a thicker appearance than patients with dark or fine hair.

Hair replacement surgery does wonders for your self-confidence and appearance, but you have to make the personal decision to undergo the procedure. Understanding the steps and anticipated outcome will support your efforts to make an informed decision.

What to Expect from Hair Transplantation?

The primary factor for hair transplantation is having donor sites with hair that is dense enough to fill in your areas of thinning and baldness. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be bald or have bald areas to be a candidate for hair restoration. In fact, we recommend that you consider the procedure as early as possible so that we can recommend treatments to slow your hair loss. The procedure can be performed at any age, but the approach tends to be more conservative for men and women in their 20s or 30s because the hair in the donor site may not be completely established.

During your consultation, Dr. Work describes the expected results of your hair transplantation. Consideration is given to the color of your hair and skin, as these factors combined with hair texture will affect the overall perception of fullness after the transplantation. If you choose to have hair transplantation surgery, Dr. Work describes the recommended technique and details of the surgery, including anesthesia, recovery, risks and cost.

Hair Replacement Process

Each hair transplantation surgery is unique to the individual patient, but Dr. Work does follow some similar steps for men and women. Most patients are comfortable with only local anesthesia, but we can administer an oral medication to keep you relaxed. The donor hair is harvested by removing a very thin strip of soft tissue and individual hairs from the back or sides of the scalp. Each strip contains a large number of donor hairs. The strip is then cut into smaller grafts, each of which may contain one to five hairs. Dr. Work makes tiny incisions in the balding and thinning area and a graft is inserted into the incision. The procedure takes three to eight hours depending on the extent of hair replacement that is needed.

Unlike early hair transplantation techniques, today’s techniques involve positioning the grafts in a way that creates the natural pattern of hair growth. As a result, our patients enjoy years of renewed hair growth with most people not knowing that they ever had a problem with balding or thinning hair.

After Your Hair Transplant Surgery

Your scalp will be bruised and tender after the procedure. Dr. Work applies a bandage around your head to minimize these symptoms and promote healing. You will need to stay home and rest for two to three days. Dr. Work may prescribe a pain medication to help alleviate your discomfort and help you rest. We will provide detailed recovery instructions after your surgery.

After three days, you can resume your normal activities, but you should avoid strenuous activities for at least two weeks. Once you are fully healed, Dr. Work will recommend treatments to help prevent further hair loss and keep your hair full and healthy.

You may notice that some of the transplanted hair falls out over the first one to three months. This is normal and caused by the donor hair being replaced with new hair growth. After three to four months, the hair is established and hair loss subsides. You will see the full results after six to nine months.

Do I Need Multiple Hair Restoration Procedures?

Dr. Work may recommend a gradual hair restoration schedule that involves multiple procedures. The reason for this approach is to give you time to adjust to your new hair and decide if you are satisfied or want fuller, thicker hair. Many patients see this approach as beneficial because the change in appearance is not sudden and dramatic which can attract unwanted attention to your hair replacement. Having multiple procedures over time also makes the cost more affordable to men and women.
