Tummy Tuck in Brookhaven, GA

Weight loss efforts following childbirth or a desired change in lifestyle require much dedication and discipline to be successful. However, for some people, no amount of dieting, exercise, or strength training will reduce or tighten loose abdominal skin, which may cause people who have lost a significant amount of weight to feel insecure and defeated despite their weight loss success. Dr. Frederick T. Work, Jr., is a board-certified plastic surgeon at the Atlanta Center for Breast and Aesthetic Surgery, where he performs tummy tuck procedures to tighten the abdominal muscles and remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen. Dr. Work uses this body contouring procedure to create slimmer, more defined midsections for men and women across Brookhaven, GA.

What Is A Tummy Tuck?

Abdominoplasty, more commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, is a cosmetic procedure that tightens the abdominal walls and slims the waistline to create a slimmer, more defined midsection. Childbirth and drastic fluctuations in weight can weaken the abdominal muscles that make the stomach appear flat and firm, giving way to lax, hanging skin across the midsection. The tummy tuck is designed to remove this loose, hanging skin and repair weakened abdominal muscles that have been stretched or separated beyond their limits. The procedure may also remove mild to moderate cases of stretch marks across the lower abdominal region, but more severe cases of stretch marks are usually difficult to remove.

Tummy tuck surgery is performed through a horizontal, bikini line incision, which often leaves a thin, horizontal scar directly above the pubic area. The exact size of the incision and subsequent scar depends on the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed. In cases where the patient suffers from a severe case of skin and/or abdominal muscle laxity, a second incision is made around the navel to remove excess skin above the belly button. Note that this type of incision does not reposition the belly button.

Benefits Of A Tummy Tuck

All patients considering a tummy tuck should have reached or be near their ideal weight and be in reasonably good health before undergoing the procedure. A tummy tuck provides a number of benefits to our patients, including:

  • Removal of lax, hanging, excess skin and stretch marks from the abdominal area.
  • Repairing and strengthening severely stretched or separated abdominal muscles.
  • Softening the appearance of scars from a C-section, appendectomy, gynecological surgery, and other past surgeries.

How Is A Tummy Tuck Performed?

At the start of surgery, Dr. Work will make two incisions, one near the belly button and the other along the top of the pubic region. The abdominal muscles are then tightened, and excess skin that has been stretched by pregnancy and weight gain is removed from above the belly button and the lower abdominal region. The remaining skin is then pulled taut, and the belly button is repositioned. Liposuction may also be used during the procedure to contour the flanks and abdominal region and create a more dramatic result.
